Position Paper 4 | Wildcard: Mobile Apps in Education
As a college student, there are popular apps that campus communities and groups encourage me to have to ensure proper and efficient communication. BAND is an all-in-one app designed for the basics of everything: messages, calendars, files, photos, videos, and more. BAND is a popular platform for large communities to share content with each other, hold one another accountable, and for leaders to main control over group communication. Similar to that platform, GroupMe is another app designed to bring communities like universities, on-campus ministries, shared class courses, sports teams, and clubs together through group chats, event planning, and other features.
The BAND app is an app that I've been using since high school, as I continue to use it now: cheer in high school and band right now. The main character of this app it that it allows communities to share content (similar to social media platforms) and respond with one another but in the privacy of their own community. If a leader wishes to be the only one to post content, there is a setting option that puts limitations on admin control. This option also allows the manage member(s) to enable and disable comments and enable a code-required mode for members wanting to join the band group. This app is great for communities in the education field-- a way to maintain professionalism while being able to contact students.
GroupMe is popular for its mimicked version of regular text messaging but with an upgrade. Users can create a personal profile where you can insert a profile picture, attended university, degree major, graduation date, and a bio. You can even link your personal profiles on social media platforms to make connecting outside of GroupMe easy and simple, as well as discover groups. One of the app's notable features is the Blog option on the main menu of the website. Clicking on this tab will lead you to blogs (I'm assumed are written by GroupMe corporation employees) that sheds light on highlights of the app, such as Meet Group CoPilot: AI That's Where You Need It and Why GroupMe Is Perfect For TV Watch Groups: Watch, Predict, and React in Real Time.
Both apps play a significant part in internet communications for large communities wanting to connect with one another and are considerably successful along with other applications, such as Remind and TeamSnap.
