Position Paper 3 | Forecasting the Future: AI in Social Media

(CLICK PHOTO for 5 Ways AI Can Transform Your Social Media Strategy)

Artificial Intelligence in social media is one of the most significant sources in today's internet communications and (what I believe to be) a primary leader in future global media. Think about it: if not most, all social media platforms use AI to some degree, whether that be for entertainment, visual filters, content recognition and personalized content, social media marketing, or user-influencer engagement. Are these facts not true? Do you sometimes wonder why your TikTok 'fyp' knows exactly what you're going through, or how you keep seeing videos you relate to so well that it's almost creepy? How does Facebook know that you're looking to buy a used Jeep Cheroke when you only viewed one post with that particular vehicle? AI in the social media world is a dominant playing factor in this very moment, so what does that mean for the future?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in media has completely revolutionized the ways of global communication for societies on a regular basis. The article above explains that AI refers to the ability of machines to stimulate human intelligence and complete tasks normally done by humans and has gradually shifted to be a more dynamic interaction on social media platforms. There are a conflicted variety of benefits and negatives from the enhancement of AI, but the benefits are highly favored by social media users, which is heavy encouragement for AI corporations and how they choose to develop AI in social media.

Social Media Marketing

Social media marketing (SMM) has become a significant advocate for sales and the development of both popular and unpopular businesses. Sources like TikTok shop and the Instagram cart unfortunately encourages over-consumption and has formed a societal have-to-have-it state of mind. For businesses, this is good. The AI algorithm method that results in personalized content also presents personalized products, which ultimately can make businesses stay ahead of the market and make data-driven decisions. This algorithm pushes businesses with similar products to the most favored and purchased brands to be seen and potentially increase sales and website traffic.

It's hard to think about how this could become any more innovative than it is now because it feels like the perfect set up of convenient, easy access for social media users and companies. This is shaping the decline of original marketing tactics in the future.

My personal forecast of AI's effect in social media marketing is this: the more reliant buyers are on influencers and social media online shopping will be beneficial for business owners and social media influencers, but that will mean an even lesser demand for television advertisements, print marketing and direct mail marketing. I can't remember the last time I received a direct mail packet from Ulta Beauty, but if I'm being honest, it hasn't crossed my mind until now. My fyp on TikTok consists of makeup products that you can find in Ulta Beauty or just purchase from TikTok shop, so why waste the money on print packets and shipping? Businesses will begin to rely fully on AI to create product review advertisements without having to use a human individual to review the product. The negative side of this is that it will cause disruption for influencers that specialize and make money off of this type of content, as well as available positions for social media managers.

Zapier is an AI tool created to make the social media marketing aspect of businesses easier for business owners. It connects AI to over 8,000 tools that you can utilize as an innovator. Zapier Agent is a tool that allows anyone to create a social media manager that can automatically research your particular niche and perform tasks of your choice, such as extracting particular pieces of data, writing high-converted posts for relevant social media platforms, and scheduling them.

AI in Social Media Global Market

If you were wondering what the AI in social media market growth forecast looks like, I'm two steps ahead of you. The Business Research Company presented a graph and estimate of how much the AI in social media market size will develop from 2024 to now 2025. The growth rate will result from the AI use of social media like mentioned previously (personalized content recommendations, enhanced user engagement, image and video recognition, social listening and insights, and influencer marketing optimization.) If the world continues to utilize AI to its full potential and growth continues to incline over the next few years, it is predicted that the market size will grow to $7.87 billion in 2029 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 30.7%.

Fake News and Harmful Content

AI has the ability to recognize the authenticity of content and flag potentially harmful content. The advanced machine techniques have presented AI to be reliable as a quick identifier for fake content, and it can sufficiently remove it from the platform. This has become a strong force on the TikTok platform, seen with hate speech videos and any other harmful content. Unfortunately, multiple creators that are in the creator awards program have complaints about their personal content getting flagged for unnecessary reasons. This type of AI is helpful, yet it seems to be overpowering its judgement of harmful content, which is creating more difficulty for users.

With time and enough pressure from users, I assume TikTok will either continue to personally adjustment comments that have been wrongfully flagged or recode some of the AI's functions to better identify if a comment is hate speech or a realistic, genuine response to content.

These are only a few ways that AI is shaping social media and how I and other sources predict its effect on social media to be in the future. AI technology is increasing faster and more efficiently than some of the methods social media platforms were using to make do before AI became a regularly sought out tool. Now that it is one of the major reliabilities for things like social media marketing and reducing the spread of misinformation, there is more room for AI to advance.  With the Social Media Global Market Report 2025 and predictions of the future's growth rate, it is safe to assume that the future of AI in social media looks promising.
